Vancouver Hip Hop History

I'm not endorsing or saying I like all these tracks and artists, but at least it gives you all a slice of the history and present. Okay, I like EQ, Rascalz and Jaykin...

EQ - 2 Much 4 Da Mental

1980s/1990s Vancouver hip hop group consisting of Incredible Ease and Quaze(delic)

Terror T - Total Kaos (1992)

Rascalz - Soul Obligation (1997)

Jaykin - So Sincere/Writing On the Wall featuring Edge 1 & Benny Fresh (2006)

Manik - Commercial Drive (2006)

Emotionz - Skytrain (2007?)

Heatwave - Chill From '93 Till (2009?)

As a side note, the videos by Terror T and Heatwave (I'm pretty sure) both feature a foot bridge that was built as a result of mom's taking action, camping out and blockading the railway tracks so that their kids would have a safe way to cross to get to school back in 1971 in Strathcona, East Vancouver.

Slum Village @ Rock The Bells in Vancouver

Slum Village was the main attraction for me at the Rock The Bells hip hop festival in Vancouver's suburb of Burnaby on August 1, 2009.

And they didn't disappoint, although a longer set at an indoor venue would be nice too.

Between sets, the DJ shouted out and played J Dilla's "F___ The Police", which was nice, and funny too since the place was crawling with Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

R.I.P. Baatin and J Dilla!!!

Pam the Funkstress and Invincible in Vancouver

The Coup's DJ, Pam the Funkstress, played a great mix of old and new, east and west, as she tore up the turntables with her skills at the Under the Volcano music festival in North Vancouver and invited up Detroit MC Invincible and Seattle MCs Khingz and Gabriel Teodros for some decent to excellent (Khingz) freestyles on August 9, 2009. I especially appreciated hearing the MC Breed joint, "Ain't no future in yo' frontin'" and "Call me D-Nice".

Invincible's own set at Under the Volcano suffered from bad sound, no thanks to the non hip hop fan sound man, I guess. Her DJ seemed like she could use some more confidence too.

The crowd sucked, as always. Hippies and hipsters. Not hip hop. Invincible tried many times to get people to shout back R.I.P. Baatin and J Dilla and Proof, but it seemed like almost nobody knew what was what. So she ended up saying that if you don't know Dilla you should google him. True, but kinda sad too, given the context.

Invincible got the most response when she shouted out some anti-Olympics sentiment. She'd shown some documentary music videos and done a workshop a few days prior at an art gallery in the Downtown Eastside. The highlight for me was the part of the video showing people in Detroit taking direct action to bust back in and reclaim their homes from foreclosures.

"Bust 'em out the park" mix for May Day

Here's the track list of the "Bust 'em out the park" mixtape (an actual tape!) that was played over a decent sound system at the May Day celebration event in Grandview Park in East Vancouver on May 1, 2009. The event was alright and people were feelin' the music but it ended up mostly spoiled by hippies and a confused/selfish woman dominating things and interrupting the tunes. Some leaflets about the history of May Day and other leaflets were grabbed up by the rabble and hotdogs and hippie food were served by separate groups. Hot dogs for the hommies, rabbit food for the hippies.
